When the world reach the 1920's era, World War 1 was finishing up and the various countries that were involved in it were starting to recover with booms in business. Now, although the hemlines did rise in the 1920's, they tended to stay around ankle or mid-calf length until the mid 1920's when they became the full shorter hemline that we think of as associated with the era (flappers, etc.).
Ladies of the day had the choice of a waivering hemline if those shorter hemlines were too much for them. With a waivering hemline, the front of the dress or skirt would be short and the sides and/or back would be long. Clothes of the 1920s became simpler and lighter in weight with silhouettes being straight and tubular coloumn with dropped waists covering all body curves. Since feminine curves were long a symbol of a woman's fraility, perhaps the 1920s era wedding dress is a real "strong" choice for a bride! Wedding dresses in the 1920's were based on these kinds of styles as well and so were shorter in length or with the waivering hemlines as mentioned above.
