How to Plan a Small Budget Wedding in 2012?

by Melissa
( Easton Pa)

So I am plainning my wedding for 2012.

I, myself, have a fairly small family. My fiancé on the other hand, has anything but a small family.

We are on such a small, small budget, I would like to know of any ideas of how I can plan a wedding for 200 people and not go broke.

All of the 200 people are family members. The only friends are the ones in the party.

I just do not know what to do.

Answer by Diane:

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your question and welcome to our community!

I think you have already done the hard part of how to pare down your wedding guest list by limiting it to only important family members and friends, so let's see what else you can do to plan a small budget wedding in 2012.

Since the bulk of your budget gets spent on your wedding reception venue and meal, let's focus on ways to cut back there.

If you choose to have an early morning wedding and serve a brunch style wedding reception meal, you will certainly pay less per plate.

The same goes if you choose finger foods to serve to your guests.

If you have your heart set on a dinner wedding reception, don't worry, there are some ways to still cut down on your budget.

First, make sure that you find a venue that serves dinner via a self-service buffet or at the very least family style platters left at each table.

Anytime you can take paid servers out of the equation, you will definitely save on your wedding budget.

Also, go for simpler faire such as breads, salad, pasta and chicken or beef instead of more expensive choices such as lobster and shrimp, etc.

If you start calling around, I'm sure that you will be surprised at what venue you can find that can support your budget.

Instead of looking at the glamorous, fancy halls out there, instead look at clubs, community centres, even museums and handle the decorating yourselves.

You will definitely save money the more things you can do yourself!

Hope that helps and please do check out my Wedding Budget Tips for more ways to save.
