When you make your own bridal bouquets, you will be sure to save money on the cost of your wedding flowers.
How to...To make your own wedding bouquets, you will need: - 20-30 stems of a hardy flower such as roses or carnations
- bucket filled with water mixed with flower food
- stem cutter or a very sharp knife (no scissors!)
- rubber bands or floral tapes
- paper towels
- approximately 1 yard of 1-2" wide ribbon in a complementary color
- pearl headed corsage pins

The absolute first thing you have to do before constructing your own bridal bouquets is to properly process and condition the flowers. Using your hands or a stem stripper remove the excess leaves and thorns and pull off the damaged or unattractive outer petals (don't throw them away though, you can always use them for your flower girl petals!) The next step to take when you make your own bridal bouquets, is to cut the stems using your stem cutter or sharp knife, at an angle approximately 2 inches from the bottom. If your flowers are not as open as you would like them to be when you are going to make your own bridal bouquets, do not force them open with your fingers as you will likely tear them, instead just blow warm air into them to gently encourage them to open or place them in a warm place for a little while. Even though you should always order about 10-15% more flowers than what you need, just in case, if there are any flowers looking a little piqued and not quite up to bouquet standard, fear not there are ways to revive your wedding flowers. Start Assembling Your Bouquet Take one flower that will be the center. Start adding flowers one by one going around that first one flower and you will start to see the rounded shape of your bouquet begin to take shape. You can also look in a mirror and hold it in front of you to check the shape as you go along. As you continue adding flowers to your bouquet, you should keep grasping them in the same hand and hold them about 3 to 4 inches below the flower heads.

Once you have added as many flowers to produce the fullness of the bouquet that you would like, then use your elastics or tape to bind the stems in the place where your hand was holding them. You can also tape or use elastic to bind the stems further down the stems to hold everything in place. You can now either place the bouquet in a vase or other holder with water and flower food and wrap the stems later or finish them off now.

If you would like to finish making your own bridal bouquets now, use your sharp knife to cut the stems (underwater) to all the same length (about 7 or 8 inches). Make sure that you dry off the stems very carefully and then take your coordinating ribbon and tuck it into the top elastic band or tape it in place to start. Wind you way down til you are about 2 inches from the end of the stems and then wind your way back up again to the top where you started.

Finish off by pushing in pearl headed corsage pins along length of the ribbon to fasten it securely and also to add beautiful detail to the bouquet you just made! It's best if you could make your own bridal bouquets the morning of the wedding to keep it looking the freshest. If this is not feasible for yourself to do, then try to get one of your Volunteer Wedding Coordinators. Otherwise, keep it in water for as long as possible and see if you can take a vase of water with you along throughout the day, so that you can place your bouquet in water when they are not required. It is also a great idea and must have to fully coat your flowers with a preservative product such as Clear Crowning Glory, etc. to ensure that your flowers look their best throughout your special day. Quality fresh cut flowers and floral supplies can be purchased through an online website that I recommend at "I Do" Wedding Flowers.
