Even when you have found your perfect wedding dress, you probably still have some wedding dress alteration to do to make it even more perfect.
It is hard to believe that you will perfectly fit into any wedding dress that is not custom made for you by a seamstress from a pattern that is perfectly tailored to your form. Even if you do go this route, chances are that you will have to have some kind of fitting with the seamstress and she/he would have to make some changes. Why? Because it is almost impossible that you are a perfect size 10, 12, 14 or whatever! So, if you do find a dress that fits perfect and needs no wedding dress alteration, congratulations (and I would play the lottery!) because you are truly one of the lucky ones. I was actually pretty close to being one of those lucky ones, but I still took my dress to the seamstress (minor bead repair and bustles put in). There are a number of items that could be required changing on your dress, including, but not limited to: - length
- repairs to beadwork
- taking in (much easier to do than letting out, by the way)
- sewing bustles
The bustles, in case you didn't know, are the system of latches or hooks that take up your train after the ceremony and pictures are done. Check out Bustle Wedding Dress for more information on wedding dress bustles. When done up, your dress looks "even" length (with a bit fuller butt) but it is kept out of the way so that you can easily move around to visit with your guests and dance. One thing to be careful of, (I know because it happened to me) is not to partake in the bunny hop or a conga line. Someone behind me stepped on my dress and ripped out the hook for one of my bustles...thank God one of my guests had a safety pin holding her top closed and graciously gave it to me to hold my dress up. You'll probably be offered wedding dress alteration service at the bridal shop, if you purchased it there. I will warn you that you will also probably pay top dollar for their services. Alterations could cost between $75-$250, so it pays to shop around for a seamstress. Ask around family and friends for someone they like to use regularly and chances are you'll probably be happy with their services. You can also check in the yellow pages or on the internet for local seamstresses that would be more than happy to work with you in creating your perfect look for your perfect day.
