Now you might think that it is kind of twentieth century to cut and tape your dress together; why not something a little more high tech?

Well, having it this way you can physically bring your wedding dress up game creation into your local wedding dress shop to show it to the salesperson to help you find the style you want right away.

And hey, it's kind of fun, so why not get more people to help (your bridesmaids, friends, relatives, etc.) you find your perfect dress.

The mixing and matching and styles you can create in the wedding dress up game are incredible and besides, it kind of makes you feel like a kid again (do you remember playing with paper dolls?)

It also will help to teach you all the different styles and what they are called; the different neckline styles, skirt styles, sleeve styles, etc.

Instructions for the Wedding Dress Up Game:

It could be hard to start looking for the perfect wedding dress, so start by figuring out what style of dress will look the best on your body type.

Body Types:

  • Apple Shape - If you have an apple shape, you have a large frame. Your bottom and hips are full as well as your torso and you have little waist definition.

What your dress should do is try to create an elongating silhouette with high waistlines and a skirt that flows away from the body. A fitted bodice with corset back will also create a proportioned silhouette.

Wedding dress styles that will flatter your shape are Empire and Ball Gown with either a Strapless or Sweetheart neckline.

  • Hourglass Shape - If you have an hourglass shape, your shoulders and hips are about the same width and you have a well defined waist.

Your perfect dress will take advantage of your proportioned body and defined waistline by playing up an embellished style.

Fitted gowns also show off your curvy figure. Just make sure the gown hugs your smaller body parts.

Wedding dress styles that will flatter you are Sheath, A-Line, Ball Gown, Dropped Waistline and Mermaid with a One-Shoulder, Strapless or Scoop neckline.

  • Inverted Triangle Shape - If you have an inverted triangle shape, you have broad shoulders and your hips are slightly narrower than your shoulders.

What is suggested with your shape is for you not to cover your shoulders. When you cover your shoulders you may actually make them look wider than they are.

The key is to show them off and in this way, your eye will be drawn inward, making your waist look narrower.

Skirts with texture and fullness will also balance out your upper half.

The dress styles that will flatter your shape are the Sheath, Empire, Ball Gown, or A-Line with a Halter, Strapless, or One-Shoulder neckline.

  • Pear Shape - With this shape, the bottom half of your body, hips, thighs, and bottom, are larger than your upper half.

You should try to enhance the smaller part of your body, your upper half. For a more proportioned look, you could also add depth to your upper half, by wearing a sort of sleeve and a skirt that loosely flows into your lower half.

The dress styles that flatter the pear shape are Empire, A- Line, or Ball Gown with a Strapless, or Halter with Circular Collar neckline.

  • Rectangle Shape - If you have a rectangle shape, your shoulders and hips are about the same width with little waist definition.

Your perfect wedding dress should add curves to your silhouette by simply defining the waist.

You can achieve this affect with an empire waist, a beaded detail around the natural waistline, or a colored sash.

With this body type, you can play up your bodice or skirt with asymmetrical pleating or lace appliques.

The styles that will flatter your shape are the Sheath, Empire, A-Line, Ball Gown or Mermaid with a Portrait or Strapless neckline.

  • Small Bust Shape - If you have a small bust shape, you have an A cup or smaller.

What you want to do with this body type is to create the illusion of a fuller bust by wearing a rouched or embellished bodice.

You can also add shape with a very fitted bodice and full skirt.

The dress styles that will flatter your shape is the Empire, A-Line or Ball Gown with a Bateau, Jewel or Sweetheart neckline.

  • Large Bust Shape - If you have a large bust shape, you have C cup or larger.

What you want to do with this body type, if you are trying to de-emphasize your large bust, is to balance out the rest of your body by opting for more open necklines that will draw the attention upward.

The dress styles that will flatter your shape are the A-Line or Ball Gown with a Square, V-Neck or Off the shoulder neckline.

You can also find more information on dress suggestions on the Design Your Own Wedding Dress page.

Wedding Dress Up Game - Materials to Use

One of the first things you have to think about when you are playing the wedding dress up game, is the type of Wedding Dress Fabric you will be using.

Some fabrics are quite light in nature, whereas others are quite heavy and thicker. Think of the time of the year when you are going to be married, or, if you are planning a destination wedding, investigate what the weather and temperature is going to be like where you are going to be married.

You don't want to end up wearing heavy velvet fabric on an 86 degree beach in Jamaica!

The type of Wedding Dress Fabric you choose also depends on the cut and the style of the wedding dress you are going to be designing.

For instance, if you are wanting perhaps a more vintage or Victorian look, you would be looking at a Batiste fabric to get that homespun vintage wedding dress look.

If you want a more sexy, clingy look, satin is ideal, just make sure that your dress isn't too tight to begin with.

Some fabrics are matte finish and some are more shiny in nature so it all depends on the look you want. Whatever fabric you choose, don't forget all the different kinds of Wedding Dress Lace that you can use to adorn it as well.

Wedding Dress Up Game - What To Do After?

Once you have play the wedding dress up game and have your perfect wedding dress, what do you do now? Well, you have a couple of choices.

Either you can take what you have come up with, tape it carefully all together along with your thoughts of material, lace and detailing and take it to your local dress shops to see if they have anything in stock to match what you have come up with.

Or you can shop and save from the comfort of your own home and computer by looking up the free online wedding dress catalogues of the shops that I recommend you shop from:

One really neat thing you can do at David's Bridal is to use their Interactive Dress Your Wedding tool. This tool will allow you not only to dress the bride, but also all the other member's of your wedding party, including groom, bridesmaid, flower girl's, ring bearer, etc.

If you don't find anything that you really like from these sources, perhaps you would be better off finding Bridal Fabric and hiring a talented seamstress.

One of the benefits of having your wedding dress made for you is that you can be sure it will fit like a glove with no Wedding Dress Alteration needed.

Now to find the talented seamstress! Some are only qualified to work from a pattern, so if you don't have one, you may have to find a master tailor who can make a pattern from the result of your Wedding Dress Up Game. Then you can take your pattern to a seamstress to get it made.

To find the perfect seamstress, you do have a few choices:

  • Word Of Mouth - check around with friends and family to see if they or someone they know can recommend a seamstress or dressmaker and then seek them out as soon as you can. If they are really good, they could be booked months in advance.

Even if they come with many recommendations, be sure that you check out samples and pictures of what they have made in the past and if you think that your personalities can mesh so that you will be able to work together. Make sure that the seamstress has made dresses like the one you are interested as you don't want to be her first project in a new design.

  • Professional Referrals - you can usually get referrals from the other sources. These include alterations specialists, fabric shops, bridal shops, a theatre or opera company (they use the best seamstresses for creating costumes for the stage), the internet and the phone book.

However, you find one, check out her work ahead of time by having her make something else for you like a skirt or blouse, that way you can see how competent a seamstress she is and if she is good to work with.

Once you have decided on a dressmaker, schedule a sit-down meeting with him or her and go over your pattern, or describe in detail the gown you want.

You may already have purchased the fabric, but if not, discuss the type of fabric you are considering. The seamstress may have ideas as to how well different material will work with your design.

Make sure to get an estimate of what it will cost to have the dress made, and whether extras, such as buttons, zippers and thread, are included.

Most dressmakers will include these in their fee, but if you want something special, such as vintage buttons, you will need to purchase them yourself. If possible, get the estimate in writing.

Remember, having a dress made isn’t guaranteed to be cheaper; if you are using expensive fabrics and a complex design, the cost of materials combined with the seamstress’ bill could exceed the price tag on that store-bought gown.

Be prepared for many fittings. If the seamstress takes your measurements and tells you to pick the dress up in three weeks, be wary. Making a wedding gown is not the same as getting your jeans hemmed.

In order to avoid giving yourself last minute stress, make sure that you give the seamstress a clear deadline. You could even tell her/him that you need the dress a few weeks prior to your wedding date, just to make sure that it will be done in time.

So have fun with this Wedding Dress Up Game and soon your beautiful wedding dress will be all that you have imagined!
