How to Make Bridal Bouquets

Before starting the topic of How to Make Bridal Bouquets, it is important to make some decisions as to color and the design style the bouquet will have.

This is an easy bouquet choice for a DIY bride to make. It consists of using a single color choice but deriving uniqueness through texture of various flowers.

Before starting to make your bridal bouquet, make sure that you have all the materials you will need.

Make sure that the flowers you choose have been properly conditioned prior to using them in your bouquet. Proper conditioning is very important to the life of your bouquet.

In order to create the following bouquet, the following flowers were used:
  • 6 white roses
  • 9 white lilacs
  • 8 white agapanthus
  • 20 white freesias

You should also make sure that you have on hand:

  • a sharp knife
  • floral tape or elastics
  • approximately 1 yard of 1"-2" ribbon
  • pearl headed corsage pins

How to Make Bridal Bouquets - Step 1

In order to make it easier to work with your flowers, trim them to a length of about 40cm. Group all of your flower types together in groups of three or four.

Group them by spiraling them together so all the stems are facing the same way and tape them using the floral tape at approximately one hand's length from the bottom of the flowers.

How to Make Bridal Bouquets - Step 2

Start to add the bunched flowers together, ensuring you continue to spiral. Spiraling your flowers is very important. if all the stems are going in the same direction, they all find their own space.

If the stems start to cross each other, they will be in conflict and this can result in soft stems being squashed by harder stems when you tie the bouquet at the end.

Spiraling will also make a bouquet look neater if you decide to place it in a vase.

Hold in one place and surround each group with different flower groups. It's important to note here that wherever your hand holds the bouquet as it is being formed will dictate what shape your bouquet will be.

If you hold you hand one hand's length from the start of the flower head, you will get a tighter bouquet than if you hold your hand lower on the stems.

How to Make Bridal Bouquets - Step 3

Continue adding all of your flower groups in no particular order, ensuring that they are all well mixed in among each other.

Remember to have them all sitting at the same height to give you the perfect dome shape at the end.

Once all your flowers are added, bind with floral tape or elastics in the exact same you have been holding the bouquet.

You can also tape or use elastic to bind the stems further down the stems to hold everything in place.

Decide whether you want to either place the bouquet in a vase or other holder filled with water (and flower food) and wrap the stems later or you could finish making the bouquet right now.

To finish making the bridal bouquets now, use your sharp knife to cut the stems (underwater) to all the same length (about 7 or 8 inches).

Dry off the stems very carefully and then take your coordinating ribbon and tuck it into the top elastic band or tape it in place to start.

Wind you way down til you are about 2 inches from the end of the stems and then wind your way back up again to the top where you started.

Finish off by pushing in pearl headed corsage pins along length of the ribbon and through the stems to fasten it securely and also to add beautiful detail to the bouquet you just made!

It's best if you could make your own bridal bouquets the morning of the wedding to keep it looking the freshest. If this is not feasible for yourself to do, then try to get one of your Volunteer Wedding Coordinators.
