Wedding Invitation

by Ann
(Prospect, NY)

I've ordered wedding invitations that has printed words that I want to put in it.

Now that I have to send them, do I have to write their name inside the invitation as well? Or should I just put the name on the envelope and leave the inside invitation without their name on it.

I'm afraid that if I write their name inside the invitation, it might look a little bit tacky because it would be handwritten and everything on the printed invitations are already printed.

Thank you!

Answer:

Thanks for your question. An inner envelope is a throw back to the time when mail/invitations were delivered by horse and rider and therefore the outer invitation would get dirty.

When they were delivered, the maid or butler would take the invitation out of the outer enelope and present the clean, inner envelope to the master or mistress of the house.

Nowadays, they are not really needed and many couples do indeed leave them out of their wedding invitations so to save on postage (decreases the weight of the invitation).

I think that they are still a nice thing to include especially if you are inviting kids to your wedding as that is where you usually would write "Mr and Mrs. Soandso and family", whereas the outer envelope would be addressed only to "Mr. and Mrs. Soandso.

Usually addressing wedding invitations is done in handwriting anyway, so please don't feel that your invitation (even just the inner envelope) would look tacky...it will be just fine.

Hope it helps you out,

Diane
